How search engines look at landing pages

For the most part, search engines encourage webmasters to have landing pages as they are good for channeling sales. But what they don’t endorse is low-quality pages that only have a call to action and a conversion link - no content of value. Here’s what Google looks at when ranking landing pages;

    Originality – It goes without saying that the content on the page shouldn't be present anywhere else on the web.

    Relevance – This is what the Google Panda is all about. A page should deliver what was promised in the title and meta description on the results page. Pack a punch of value and relevance - This means centering the text around the text you used in your ads, and around y our keyword. It means providing useful information directly relating to your product and the keyword. Essentially, it all boils down to one thing; providing the information necessary to convince a user why they need your product.

Make content easily accessible
- Make sure users can find your contact information, either on the landing page or through an easily-accessible about page. Make sure that, any time you ask for personal information, you’re explaining why you need it. Make sure that any sponsored links or affiliate ads are clearly marked. Make sure that you aren’t hiding anything from your potential customers.

Improve navigation - A segregated landing page reduces choice, but it hurts your ranking. Work to make it as easy as possible for users to find answers to any questions they may have. If they can’t find it on the landing page itself, make sure you clearly link to a page where the information can be found. Avoid using pop-ups as anything other than exit converters.

Speed - Make sure your landing page loads quickly. More so than a normal organic search, a PPC landing page needs to load extremely quickly. If your page takes longer than a second to load, users are going to bounce and you’re going to be wasting money on clicks.
You also need to make sure you’re following Google’s advertising policies, or you risk being removed from their PPC systems entirely.

New Snippets In Search Results by Google

Google web search has evolved greatly in recently years. Developments like the Knowledge Graph and other data sources provide users with highly relevant structured data. More recently though, Google made some unwelcome changes to the search snippets by removing authorship data from search results. The changes now make sense as Google announces the addition of some new data to search listings. The new snippets are called Structured Snippets.

Structured Snippets is a new feature integrated into search results that incorporates facts into individual result snippets. Interesting and relevant facts are extracted from the content page and displayed on search results. These can be important dates or events, technical specifications and features, price etc.

For example, if you search for a comic icon, say superman, you can see some extra information next to its Wikipedia entry such as creator, first appearance, origin etc.


This feature isn't limited to Wikipedia entries. When you search for a gadget, you will see some of its features displayed right there on search results.

Since this feature isn't exclusive to a select few sites, we can hope to see more of these snippets soon. Here's Google's explanation for the new 'richy' rich snippets;

    Structured Snippets is the latest collaboration between Google Research and the Web Search team employing that data to seamlessly provide the most relevant information to the user. We use machine learning techniques to distinguish data tables on the Web from uninteresting tables, e.g., tables used for formatting web pages. We also have additional algorithms to determine quality and relevance that we use to display up to four highly ranked facts from those data tables.

A good question that can be asked is, how will Google asses the quality of facts surfaced by theses structured snippets? Google says that will wary according to page content, but that just means another black box which webmasters will speculate about, but will never really understand.

How To Check Optimal Crawling of Website?

It is one thing to create a website and put up some content, but quite another to get it noticed by Google. Often, the more content you have, the higher your number of crawled and indexed pages in search engines. But that is not always the case. If the crawling process is not optimal, search engines might miss out on some of your content. Today, we have some guidelines for you from Google, explaining which fields in sitemaps are important, when to use XML Sitemaps and RSS/Atom feeds, and how to optimize then for Google.

 XML Sitemaps or RSS feeds?

The first question that you could ask is, which to use; XML Sitemaps or RSS/Atom feeds? Should you use RSS/Atom feeds alongside XML Sitemaps? XML Sitemaps are an indispensable part of your site, and they describe a whole set of URLs within it. On the other hand, RSS/Atom feeds describe the most recent changes.

 The problem with XML Sitemaps is, they contain complete site information, and hence are much larger than RSS feeds. Ergo they're also downloaded less frequently. So it's not a question of why, and rather why not use both these formats? Each has its own use, and complements the other.

XML sitemaps give Google information about all the pages on your site, while RSS/Atom feeds let Google know what has been most recently updated on your site. Google also adds that “submitting sitemaps or feeds does not guarantee the indexing of those URLs.”

Sitemap and RSS feeds best practices

In order to optimize the crawl process, you should use XML Sitemaps along with RSS/Atom feeds. Here are some best practices for them from Google.

  •     The two most important pieces of information for Google are the URL itself and its last modification time.
  •     Only include URLs that can be fetched by Googlebot (ie, don’t include URLs blocked by robots.txt).
  •     Only include canonical URLs.
  •     Specify a last modification time for each URL in an XML sitemap and RSS/Atom feed
  •     For a single XML sitemap, update it at least once a day and ping Google each time.
  •     For a set of XML sitemaps, maximize the number of URLs in each XML sitemap. The limit is 50,000 URLs or a maximum size of 10MB uncompressed. Ping Google when each XML sitemap is updated.
  •     When a new page is added or an existing page meaningfully changed, add the URL and the modification time to the RSS/Atom feed.
  •     In order for Google to not miss updates, the RSS/Atom feed should have all updates in it since at least the last time Google downloaded it. The best way to achieve this is by using PubSubHubbub.

 Today, we're going to take a step out of the ordinary WordPress and Blogger apps, and look at some other well known, and lesser well known apps that every blogger should have!

1. Blogsy

An app designed purely for the iPad, and your one-stop-shop for all your blogging needs. It allows full access to a wide variety of blogging platforms such as WordPress, Tumblr, Blogger, Squarespace, and more. You can also manage your Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram, and Facebook accounts right from the main page. Use the drag-and-drop feature to add photos and videos from your social networking sites into your blog posts. Create links from websites with one touch. Use gestures for such adjustments as bold print and text alignment. Create and edit posts and schedule them for publication while on the go.

If you manage multiple blogs, you’ll have easy access to all of them and be able to check on everything at a glance. Browse your content by date by checking the built-in calendar. Create, edit, and publish content, including image layout and video uploads. Receive notifications when someone comments and then edit and respond from within the app. Work offline, including creating and editing new and previously published posts. All work will be saved in the “outbox” and published when you are back online.

 5. OneNote

Microsoft's OneNote is so much better than many other note-taking applications. Sure, it might not be as rich as Evernote, but even so I always prefer OneNote. For one, it has simpler and better note management, and you can organize better hierarchies (notes within sections within notebooks etc.). And for another, you can access OneNote so easily. It comes bundled with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel etc. 2013). You can access your notes from a web browser too, not to mention the cross-platform app that's available for iOS, Android and Windows platforms.

Transfer Money with Twitter in France

If you had social networks like Twitter pegged as mere amusements, then you couldn't be more wrong. Social media finds its uses in many daily-life situations, the most recent one being wire transfer. If you live in France and want to send money over to someone, you can do it as simply as making a tweet. Your 140 characters might be worth real money soon. Perhaps the New Social Order is upon us!

 Groupe BPCE, one of France's largest banks, is working with Twitter to enable money transfer via tweets. This enablement will be done by BPCE's electronic money division, 'S-Money'. The move comes after Twitter's own initiative to earn additional revenue beyond advertising, and the recently added 'buy' button to enable purchases on the network.

    Groupe BPCE is the first banking group to offer individuals a payment solution where they can transfer money with a simple Tweet," CEO Groupe BPCE said in a statement. "This S-Money initiative opens up a whole new range of payment possibilities on the social networks.

 Twitter is racing other tech giants Apple and Facebook to get a foothold in new payment services for mobile phones or apps. They are collaborating and, in some cases, competing with banks and credit card issuers that have run the business for decades.

The bank said last month it was prepared to offer simple person-to-person money transfers via Twitter to French consumers, regardless of what bank they use, and without requiring the sender know the recipient's banking details.

    "(S-Money) offers Twitter users in France a new way to send each other money, irrespective of their bank and without having to enter the beneficiary's bank details, with a simple tweet," Nicolas Chatillon, chief executive of S-Money, BPCE's mobile payments unit, said in the statement.

 The S-Money service  allows money transfers via text message and relies on the credit-card industry's data security standards.

The payments space, however, is more mature and becoming increasingly crowded. Square, Venmo, Google and others all already offer for users to pay one another seamlessly. But that's not to say that Twitter wouldn't be interested in pursuing a true peer-to-peer payments service, but for now, it's just letting banks experiment with it on their own.

Twitter hasn't released the particulars of how this service will actually work. It will do so in a press-conference today, and we have high hopes. We need to see more such services in other countries as well.

In Example #1, suppose you write a 1000 words article, 100 readers visit that article and read it for 2 minutes each. This tells us that the average time spent by a reader on that webpage/article is 2 minutes.

Now read attentively…

in Example #2 if you embed a 3-minute video in that 1000 words article. 10 users (out of 100) watch that video for about 2 minutes. All 100 readers spend 2 minutes each to read that 1000 words article and then exit. So now what is the average time spend by a reader on that particular webpage which has a video embedded in it?

“(4 X 10) + (2 X 90)/100 = 2.2 minutes”

Google gives a lot of importance to websites on which user spends the most time and then eventually rank that site higher in SERP. Embedding a video increases the average time spend by a reader on a blog and does give it a natural and pure white hat SERP boost.

After you finish writing an article and just when you’re about to hit the ‘Publish’ button, do check on Youtube or any other popular video site for an interesting video directly related to your content. If you wrote a List of Top 5 Smartphones, it’s recommended to embed review videos of all those 5 Smartphones. This will not only increase the average time spent by a user on your webpage but also make it look more lucrative.

Number 4 – Reading Level

Did you ever have a chance to read some legal document? How is it? Is it easy to understand or very hard?

It’s hard, very hard to understand, all those alien words and the type of sentence framing and vocabulary a normal person isn’t used to. I bet you’d have to sit with a dictionary to understand it and still have some doubts.

Consider if all blog posts were written in such language, how many articles would you read? And which articles would you understand? Thus in such scenario, we have something called Reading Level.

Reading Level tells us how easier (or hard) is it to read certain type of text. There are different kinds of users utilizing the internet ranging from primary school students aged between 6-8 years to retired senior citizen aging more than 65.

If you’re using (or used) ‘WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin,’ you probably might have seen something like ‘Flesch Reading Ease Test’ and that’s what I’m talking about.

Flesch Reading Test determines the ease to read a certain piece of text. Higher the score an article gets in Flesch Reading Ease Test, the easier that article is to read. A score of 60-70 is considered ideal and is easily understood by 13-15 year old kids. To get a better understanding of this concept, its recommended to read this Wikipedia article.

If you search something on Google, it has an option to rearrange search results according to ‘Reading Level.’ Though not a major ranking factor but Google naturally does arrange results according to Reading Level, it’s very important to take Flesch Reading Ease Test Score into consideration while writing an article.

Wordpress users can use WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin to measure reading level score and other important On-Page Optimization factors. Blogger users can take advantage of to measure Reading Level of their blog post.

Recently I even published an article about a tool called Grammarly which helps to weed out grammatical, vocabulary, punctuation errors and spelling mistakes from an article. This will help you to publish a near-to-perfect blog post. It helped me get a score of 99 out of 100 from 72 out of 100 just with a few clicks.

Now let’s move on to the next On-Page Optimization Technique, shall we?

Number 3 – Sitewide Link

Most of you might know that giving sitewide (sidebar) link to another website or even receiving such links is considered highest level of Spam by Google.


A sidebar link is what I call as deceptive link. It may look like just one link, but it’s not.

Consider a website ‘A’ has 100 pages, and it give sidebar link to website ‘B,’ website ‘B’ receives not one but 100 backlinks from Website ‘A.’ Since all those 100 pages have a sidebar, Google considers this as a link from every webpage of A.

Then why I have mentioned Sitewide Link as another lesser known On-Page Optimization Technique?

Here’s the answer…

If we think a little deep and narrower, what can happen if we add a link to a webpage of the same site on the sidebar. Like Website ‘A’ links an internal article in its sidebar. Putting a sidebar link pointing to one of the internal webpage is also a sort of interlink and Google 100% supports interlinking.

Using this, you can put link to an internal article(s) on the sidebar which helps you a lot. Here’s the same strategy on my site’s sidebar.

Recently I had linked to an article on one of my other website and made some changes to that article. Later on within a week, organic traffic to that article increased from 250views/day to almost 700views/day, that’s almost 280% increase. Isn’t this strategy awesome?

If you ask me, then yes it is, all you have to do is just internal link to an article on the sidebar.

Number 2 – Comments

The second most part of a webpage that has more content (meat) after the blog post itself is the comments.

Readers do leave comment on a blog post, if they truly appreciate it. Most of the comments are either one-liner or pretty generic but few readers leave a long and valuable comment.

I hope you all know that Google bot reads a blog post as well as comments on it and can differentiate between a blog post and comments. Blog posts and comments help Google understand the context of the article.

So what can you do to help comments play an important in On-Page Optimization?

Answer is, Add Keyword(s)!

Your readers may not add the keywords in their comments you are targeting, so this is what I’d suggest you to do.

Keep the comments on moderation, once you have a long or valuable comment on hold, add one or two keywords you are targeting in that comment. No! do not keyword stuff but add keywords in such a way that it would feel natural to any human. Just add keyword once or twice in the comment and make it look pretty natural.

I would request you to not keyword stuff it because it could do more harm to your site than any good at all. If you cannot make the comment look natural once you add keyword(s), I’d suggest not doing it.

Using this technique, I’ve seen almost 30-40% increase in organic traffic for the article’s comments I modified.

Now let’s move on to the integral part of this post, the #1 On-Page Optimization Technique and it is…

Number 1 – Enticing Blog Post Title

Here’s the big daddy of all On-Page Optimization Technique. Every article written under the sun about On-Page Optimization Techniques will have blog post title in it, so why miss it.

It’s obvious for you to know that post title should be max 70 characters long as Google only reads the first 70 characters in a post title while indexing.


Do you know how much characters of that post title are actually seen by the user? Since we write article for humans and not bot, it’s very important to understand how much is actually shown to the human eye.

Thanks to SEO Moz for developing a tool that represents the exact way any search result is seen by user. I read about this tool first on Anurag Balagam’s site

Now what this tool does is represent the title that will be displayed the same way in Google Search Results. It allows you add your keyword and a title with that keyword in it and how many characters will be displayed in Search Results.

What more can be done to a blog post title once you know how many characters will be displayed?

Place keywords appropriately.

It advisable to post keyword at start or after two-three words in the title. I could write the title of this post in two different ways, and they are,

Title #1 – “On-Page Optimization Techniques: Top 5 Lesser Known Strategies” or

Title #2 – “5 Lesser Known On-Page Optimization Techniques to Understand in 2014”

Nonetheless, I’ll always suggest you to write post titles in such a way that your reader understands it and not for search engine bot. Your article title is like an advertisement to your blog post, so the more enticing it is, greater the CTR it will generate.

Well, talking about CTR, there’s one super secret technique I’d liked to share which I observed and learned from Imran Uddin’s site that they applied during Friendship Day Event.

He added characters like ‘{Geek]*’ or ‘[New]’ at the start of the blog post title. Adding such characters do not magically improve CTR but it does looks different to the reader, and he usually clicks on it if it appears on the first page.

Now most of you might not know but if a website gets high CTR, then Google automatically increases its ranking position by 3-4 places. This technique works only when the article is ranking on 1st page of Google. One of my friend tried this same strategy, and his SERP increased from 9th position to a whooping 3rd position.

Isn’t this cool? Yeah, it is.

Google Rolls Out Panda 4.1 Against More Thin Content

Google has announced that it is rolling out the next iteration of its infamous Panda algorithm that is a filter designed to kill thin or poor content in search rankings. The update started rolling out this week, and will continue into the next. Reportedly, it will roughly impact between 3% and 5% search queries - primarily those with thin or poor quality content we often see on download and ad websites etc.

 What's new in this algorithm?

According to Google, this version is supposed to be more precise and will allow more high-quality small and medium-sized sites to rank better. Google also claims to have been able to discover additional signals to help Panda more accurately identify low quality content, thanks to user and webmaster feedback.

This means that you don't need a massive site to earn the top spot. In the announcement, Google said;

 Based on user (and webmaster!) feedback, we've been able to discover a few more signals to help Panda identify low-quality content more precisely. This results in a greater diversity of high-quality small- and medium-sized sites ranking higher, which is nice.

 So far so good.

Another piece of good news is if you were penalized by Panda previously, then this update means the damage may have been undone if you did all the right things to correct the issue. If you see an increase in traffic by the end of next week, then it’s a good sign this update worked out in your favor.

Here is what SEJ's founder Loren Baker had to say about this update;

 This new Panda algorithmic update reinforces the fact that Google is not a fan of thin content and that crawl efficiency along with serving clear and direct data messages to Google are becoming more important than ever.

 Specializing XML sitemaps, trimming back on thin content and making sure that you are serving Google exactly what they need with minimal effort expended on part of Google-bot needs to be a huge emphasis. More so, also making sure that even in XML sitemaps, crawl priority is properly defined, and old content is not recrawled unless there is specific reason.

Now obviously, this new update can't be good news for everybody. If the estimates are true, then we're looking at a total of 5% queries effected, which is a significant number. If you have been hit, you'll know after about a week. Best of luck :)
